The association was originally started by Norm Bodkin in December 1975 Tamworth.

Due to his commitments he had at the time, he handed the reigns to Benny Joyner in 1980 who resided in Melbourne.

With fellow Steel guitarist George Xanthos of the renowned band - The Hawking Brothers - they team up and an ran the Steel Guitar Convention, which had players from all over Australia perform.

The SGA was re-ignited after a afternoon BBQ get together with David Moore, Carl Pender, Rob Anderson and Timothy J Fry, with the commitment to honor the original SGA in 2011.
